Hollywood legend Sigourney Weaver’s London stage performance in a dramatic scene was abruptly halted when two Just Stop Oil activists stormed the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, during an evening performance of ‘The Tempest,’ reported by Variety.

The ‘Alien’ star, who was sitting in a chair in the middle of the stage, was escorted away by theatre staff after protesters set off a confetti cannon and stormed the stage. It was announced that the show would have to be stopped.

The activists held an orange banner that read: “Over 1.5 degrees is a global shipwreck.” It’s a reference to both Shakespeare’s play about a doomed ship and recent climate data. The protest lasted less than a minute before a couple of activists were dragged off stage.

Just Stop Oil is known for its high-profile demonstrations at cultural sites, including an exhibition at Chelsea and the Proms, and at Stonehenge. It linked its theatrical intervention in cultural events and spaces to recent climate data, which shows global temperatures are set to exceed the internationally agreed target of 1.5C by 2024. The group is calling on the UK government to completely phase out fossil fuels by 2030.

Fight against climate change

Climate change campaigners have a habit of disrupting high-profile events to draw attention to their cause. Among their previous targets has been the National Gallery. This latest demonstration comes amid growing concern from scientists around the world. They warn that exceeding the 1.5 degree threshold could trigger devastating environmental consequences.
