A gunman opened fire at an adult education center in the Swedish city of Örebro, killing at least 10 people. The country’s prime minister called it the worst mass shooting in Sweden’s history. Swedish police are still investigating how the tragedy happened, reported by CNN.

At 6:33 a.m. ET on Tuesday, police were called to a shooting in Örebro, a city about 100 miles west of the capital Stockholm. The shooting occurred at Campus Risbergska, a school for adults who have not completed their previous education.

Such adult schools are known as Komvux in Sweden. Komvuxes provide vocational training, Swedish language lessons and other courses for adults seeking qualifications needed for employment. They are also a key service for refugees and migrants in Sweden.

Cellphone video shows students hiding under desks as alarms beep and red lights flash. Andreas, a 28-year-old student at the campus, said his classmates barricaded the door and hid for about an hour before police entered the classroom and evacuated the students.

Police said they did not know the shooter, were not affiliated with any groups and did not believe he was ideologically motivated. Police said the shooter also shot officers after they arrived on campus. Police said at a news conference on Wednesday that when they found the shooter, he was already dead and appeared to have shot himself. Authorities have not yet identified the shooter.

How many people were killed or injured?

Police said at least 10 people were killed and six were injured in the attack. The shooter also died. On Wednesday, the regional government in Örebro said six people were being treated at the local university hospital. Three women and two men, all adults, were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds and underwent surgery.

The injuries were initially thought to be non-life-threatening, but authorities said five were now in a stable but serious condition. Another woman was also treated for minor injuries. Authorities said no one else was taken to hospital overnight. Many students had left the campus after taking their national exams on Tuesday when the attack began.
